Understanding the problem

What is the
Great Firewall?

China's internet censorship system uses deep packet inspection, IP blocking and DNS poisoning to cut off foreign services in real time — and it's been getting significantly more aggressive.

Why did it get worse recently?

The GFW underwent major upgrades in 2022 and again in early 2024. Machine learning now identifies VPN traffic patterns in real time — even obfuscated protocols that used to work reliably.

International roaming (eSIM) has never been targeted — it routes through foreign networks before touching China's infrastructure.

2003
GFW launched. Basic IP and DNS blocking.
2012
Deep packet inspection added. VPNs begin to be targeted.
2022
Major upgrade. Most commercial VPNs become unreliable.
2024
ML-based protocol detection. Obfuscated VPNs increasingly blocked.
2026
Blocking escalates further. LetsVPN — one of the last reliable consumer VPNs for China — ends mainland service.

Connection strategy

VPN for edge cases.
Use roaming-routed data first.

A VPN-only plan is fragile for tourists. A travel eSIM or home roaming package is usually the most reliable phone setup, while VPN remains useful for laptops and hotel Wi-Fi when it still connects.

Recommended for most tourists
China Travel eSIM

Install before departure, enable data roaming after landing, and use it for blocked foreign apps on mobile data.

  • Usually strongest for Gmail, WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, and work apps.
  • No tunnel app or VPN protocol to configure.
  • Hotspot can support laptops if the plan allows tethering.
Best for normal number access
Home carrier roaming

Your existing carrier may route China data through its international roaming path, while keeping your normal number alive.

  • Best option for SMS and banking verification.
  • Often easier for business travelers.
  • Check data caps and throttling before departure.
Backup option only
VPN

Useful for laptops and hotel Wi-Fi, but mainland networks actively disrupt many VPN protocols.

  • Install and test before you fly.
  • Choose obfuscated servers where available.
  • Do not make it your only way to access travel documents.
Essential apps

Beyond internet —
what you actually need.

China runs on different apps. Sort these out before you land.

💳
Payments
China is nearly cashless
Alipay International — accepts foreign Visa/Mastercard
WeChat Pay — useful for local contacts
⚠ Set up before arrival. Verification works better outside China.
🗺️
Maps & Transit
Google Maps is blocked
Apple Maps — works without VPN, download offline
Amap (高德) — real-time transit, has English mode
⚠ Even with eSIM, Google Maps data is often inaccurate in China.
🚕
Ride Hailing
Uber doesn't operate here
DiDi International — accepts foreign payment
Amap (高德) — also support Ride Hailing
Street taxis — show destination in Chinese
🌐
Translation
Essential for daily life
Google Translate — download Chinese pack offline
Youdao Translate — download the pack before departure
Camera translation works for menus and signs
💬
Communication
WeChat is how China communicates
WeChat — hotels, restaurants, everyone uses it
WhatsApp — works normally through eSIM
⚠ Create WeChat account before arrival.

Offline Backup

Everything to sort before you board.

Several of these become impossible once you land in China.

FAQ

Common China internet questions

Google, Gmail, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, many news sites and some AI tools are commonly blocked or unreliable on mainland networks.
Most phone-first tourists use a travel eSIM because roaming traffic is routed outside mainland China. VPNs are still useful as backup for laptops and Wi-Fi.
